The old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" certainly holds true when it comes to pet health. The cost of prevention is often a fraction of the cost of treating a disease or problem once it has become more advanced, and early diagnosis and treatment of developing problems or diseases can increase the likelihood of successful outcomes.

Preventive healthcare involves a multi-faceted approach that includes veterinary evaluation of your pet's overall health and risks of disease or other health problems. Based on the findings, your veterinarian will provide you with recommendations for your pet's nutrition, dental care, vaccinations and heartworm/flea/tick prevention, as well as recommendations specifically tailored to your pet's health status and risk factors.

Your pet's behavior effects every interaction you have with him or her on a daily basis. Behavior dictates everything from meal time, to exercise time, to downtime such as relaxing on the couch with other family members. When a pet has a behavior problem, the consequences are far-reaching. Behavior problems threaten the bond you have with your pet by damaging the loving relationship that should exist between you. In extreme situations, a serious behavior problem can lead to euthanasia or surrendering a pet to a shelter.

Pets can have a wide variety of behavioral issues, from simple housetraining problems to severe anxiety and aggression issues. We are well qualified and experienced in diagnosing and addressing behavior problems with an approach that combines skills from veterinary clinical medicine, behavioral medicine, and pet training. Our goals are to help pets and their owners live together comfortably and safely, and to help restore the bond between pets and their families.

The most neglected part of your pet is it's teeth. The tartar is not just dirt or left over food but bacteria that can adversely affect your pet's health. We recommend a comprehensive exam of you pet's mouth, full mouth radiographs and a thorough cleaning with our ultrasonic scaler in order to prevent the more serious health effects that occur secondary to dental abscesses and periodontal disease. Surgical extractions are performed only when necessary.

Lakeview Animal Hospital offers both conventional x-ray and diagnostic ultrasound. Dr. Greathouse has performed animal ultrasound for several years on both an emergency and referral basis, and is familiar with it's benefits and it's limitations. Did you know that pets age faster than people and can be considered seniors at around 7 years of age? Just as our health care needs change as we age, your pet's health care needs also change. Nutritional needs, exercise habits, and many aspects of your pet's daily routine can change as your pet ages. But how can you tell the difference between normal aging and a medical problem? As in humans, some health issues that affect older pets can begin with very subtle changes that may go unnoticed until the problem has become serious.

Older pets make wonderful companions, and thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer than ever! You are an important ally in your senior pet's health care. We are here to help ensure that your pet is safe and happy throughout the golden years.

Compassionate Euthanasia
The staff at Lakeview Animal Hospital understands that the hardest part of allowing a pet to enter your life is deciding when it is time to say goodbye. We can help you with the decision and try to make the process as peaceful as we can. We welcome owners to stay with their pets during the process. First, we will sedate your pet, which allows you to hold and talk to them as they slowly get sleepy. An IV catheter is placed in their leg to ease the process of administering the medication. Then, a second injection is given which will stop heart and brain activity.

We offer cremation services through Sleepy Hollow. We offer three cremation services...

Private Cremation
As with human cremation, your pet companion is placed alone in the crematorium during the cremation process. Your companions cremains are returned to you in a decorative floral tin marked with their name, identification number and a certificate of cremation.

Semi-Private Cremation
More than one pet companion is placed in the crematory during the cremation process, though they are together, they are in separate areas of the crematory and remain segregated throughout the process. We assure that the remains of your loving companion will not get mixed with other pets. As with the private cremation service, you will receive only your pet companions cremains returned to you in a decorative floral tin marked with their name, identification number and a certificate of cremation.

Memorial Cremation
With a memorial cremation service, several pet companions are cremated at the same time. The cremains are then interred on our grounds. (Please note: when selecting a memorial cremation service, cremains are not returned to you).

Paw Prints
Many times we wish we had a small token of our companion to keep with us. Here at Sleepy Hollow, we offer our families the option of having a paw print made of their special companion. Sleepy Hollow goes the extra mile, and laser engraves your pet companions name on the paw print. This keepsake will last a lifetime for all generations to remember your loving companion.

Lakeview Animal Hospital provides a paw print for Private or Semi Private cremation. If you choose the communal cremation, you also have the option to receive a paw print.

Not all animal companions are dogs or cats. We regularly treat rabbits, guinea pigs and all pocket pets. Aside from nail trims and wing clips on smaller birds, we are not currently seeking avian patients.

Chemotherapy--

Cancer is a dreaded word, for our pets and for us. Some cancers respond to chemotherapy, but many times we are scared to try it, as we fear the side effects. While all medications have side effects, our animal chemotherapy patients do not loose their hair and rarely have gastrointestinal problems like vomiting. We consult with you about the best protocol for your pet and you.
